Managing Introduced Species, San Cristóbal, Galápagos, Ecuador

CIMEI was the company I volunteered with on San Cristobal Island, and their main goal was to manage and control the populations of introduced species so as to protect the well being of endemic flora and fauna. The islands face a lot of pressure from human societies, for we bring with us sicknesses, foreign plant and animal species, and activities that could greatly impact the natural state of the islands.
It is neat to read that Darwin saw the same animals that I did during my trip and to hear him describe how they look. He recorded seeing land and marine iguanas the latter of which he referred to as “an ugly yellowish-brown species,” a statement which I highly disagree with, for the land iguanas were some of my favorite animals because of their brilliant gold appearance.
