Join the psychology department for the 4th annual faculty chili cook off competition.  The psychology faculty will be cooking up their best pot of chili and YOU will be the JUDGE!  That's right, you get the chance to grade your professor's culinary skills.  We will serve up bowls of chili along with side dishes and drinks.

Team Intervention as a Treatment of Autism
Dr. Mathews is a retired professor from the dept. of psychology at Converse College in the field of experimental analysis of behavior and applied behavior analysis. In 1997,  he spent a sabbatical leave at UCLA studying the application of behavior analysis principles as they have contributed to early intervention in autism. Currently, he supervises intervention teams, largely comprised of college students, for several local children who have been diagnosed with autism.  Dr. Mathews will speak on his experiences using the Lovaas behavioral modification technique as an intervention for childhood autism.

Examining the Self-Discrepant Beliefs of Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain

For many adults living with chronic low back pain, losing the ability to work or engage in valued activities may lead them to feel they have exchanged the characteristics by which they define themselves (e.g., breadwinner) for less desirable traits (e.g., dependent).  Social psychologists refer to the contrast between traits individuals say they possess and traits they would like to possess or feel they ought to possess as self-discrepancy.  Self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987) is useful in describing processing biases that may impact patients’ adjustment to chronic pain.  Dr. Sandra Waters of Duke University will discuss her research contributions to understanding the relationship between self-discrepancy theory and chronic pain and illness.

Tom Killen, (Class of 1994)
Tom Killen graduated from Wofford College with a degree in Psychology in 1994.  After graduating, Tom earned his Master's degree in Industrial / Organizational Psychology at Clemson University. Following graduate school, Tom was responsible for developing employee assessment and succession planning processes at Home Depot and he is currently responsible for talent management processes at Bank of America.   Mr. Killen will discuss graduate school  and career opportunities in the field of Industrial & Organization psychology.

Lauren Murchison graduated from Wofford College with a degree in Psychology in 2005 and will complete her masters in counseling from Clemson this spring.  Lauren will speak about the community counseling graduate program available at Clemson as well as what you can do now as a psychology student to prepare for and be successful in graduate school.

The positions of President, Chair of Events, and Chair of Public Relations are available to be filled.  Here is a description of the job duties for each position:
PRESIDENT - Responsibilities include working with Dr. Pittman and the chairpersons for events and public relations to coordinate the planning and implementation of events.
CHAIRPERSON FOR EVENTS - Responsibilities include planning and coordinating events during the year including delegating specific events to other members.
CHAIRPERSON FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS - Responsibilities include promoting and publicizing events during the year as well as being the liaison between the psychology kingdom and Wofford College student affairs.
