Academic Psychology LUNCH BUNCH |
PSYCHOLOGY MAJORS LUNCH BUNCH Following the Psychology Graduate School and Careers talk on Organizational Behavior Management, we will hold the first of a series of luncheons for psychology majors. Join us for a lunch of ROLY POLY wraps, chips, and sodas. Why are we meeting? Well, previous seniors thought it might be fun and helpful to get together and discuss important topics, such as how to find a job after graduation, what elective courses to take, and how to find a summer internship. Dr. McAninch has roped in Blair Burke, Crystal Burnette, and Kimberly Smith to help her, and they thought a twice-monthly meeting would be good. They are proposing that for each meeting one student should volunteer to lead the discussion, and a handful of others should volunteer to help. Naturally, it would be good to volunteer if you already know about the topic or are willing to research it. During the luncheon, we would like students to brainstorm topics they are interested in or have questions about. Please bring your ideas to this first meeting. Future meeting announcements will be posted on this page so stay tuned! |

Field Trip to view BodyWorlds in Charlotte, NC Join the psychology faculty for a field trip to view the BodyWorlds exhibit that is temporarily on display at the Discovery Place Museum in Charlotte on Thursday, October 11. About BodyWorlds: BODY WORLDS offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the complexity of human anatomy and physiology. The exhibition features authentic human specimens preserved through a revolutionary process called Plastination. This remarkable reservation technique replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics, thereby preserving human tissue in its natural state. This unprecedented look inside illustrates how life, science and the decisions we make impact the human body. After viewing the intricate interconnectedness and remarkable engineering within each of us, visitors will leave with a better understanding of what truly makes us human. More information can be found here: http://www.discoveryplace.org/bodyworlds/home/body_worlds-faqs.php Space is limited – contact me (pittmandw@wofford.edu) to reserve your spot & ticket or ask questions. |

Story comprehension deficits among children with ADHD. ABOUT THE TALK: The presentation will review a series of studies examining the story comprehension deficits among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Three areas of impairment will be identified: difficulty making connections among story events; recognizing the most important information in a story; and effectively utilizing a story’s goal structure in creating and recalling a narrative. The results will be discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the academic problems children with ADHD experience, and how more effective treatments could be created to ameliorate these difficulties. This publication is representative of Dr.
Milich's research: ABOUT THE GUEST: Dr. Richard Milich is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. His research has addressed a variety of topics germane to the problems experienced by children with ADHD. These include: the peer problems of children with ADHD; the effects of stimulant medication and behavioral interventions in the treatment of ADHD; the cognitive difficulties of these children, with a special emphasis on story comprehension problems; and classification issues associated with this disorder. During his career Dr. Milich has been PI or co-PI on several million dollars worth of federally funded research, and he also recently served as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Mental Health for the ADHD multisite treatment study and for the ADHD innovative treatment panel.
