Forebrain-Hindbrain integration in the control of feeding behavior.

ABOUT THE GUEST:  Dr. Baird is an assistant professor of psychology at Amherst College.  His research seeks to identify neural mechanisms that participate in feeding behavior.  Specifically, Dr. Baird is interested in how sensations evoked by simple food stimuli affect feeding and how they are initially processed in the brain. He uses refined behavioral analysis and electrophysiological recording techniques to determine how systematic variations in food type (e.g., taste quality), site of sensation (mouth versus gut), and central neurochemical treatment, affect feeding microstructure and related neural responses at first- and second-order sensory relays in the brainstem.
