Behavioral Modification
Dr. Spencer Mathews, Jr.
Dr. Mathews is a professor in the dept. of psychology at Converse College in the field of experimental analysis of behavior and applied behavior analysis. In 1997,  he spent a sabbatical leave at UCLA studying the application of behavior analysis principles as they have contributed to early intervention in autism. Currently, he supervises intervention teams, largely comprised of his students, for several local children who have been diagnosed with autism.  Dr. Mathews will speak on his experiences using the Lovaas behavioral modification technique as an intervention for childhood autism.

Dr. Ed Coffey will discuss his clinical research into the relationship between depression and age.  This lecture will include data from neuroimaging techniques.  Breakfast refreshments will be provided.

Introduction to Neuropsychiatry: A Dialogue
Dr. Ed Coffey will discuss the relationship between the human brain and our behavior with a focus on the field of neuropsychiatry.  Dr. Ed Coffey specializes in neuropsychiatry, aging, and ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).  In addition to a considerable research publications, Dr. Coffey has authored many textbooks on contemporary ECT.  He is board certified in both neurology and psychiatry and is currently with the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI.  Dr. Coffey is a Wofford alumni and he received his MD and post-graduate training from Duke University.

Amusement Park Rides and Closed Head Injuries:  Science, Politics, & the Public
Dr. Nils Varney, a highly respected scientist and clinician in the field of clinical neuropsychology and particularly brain injury, served as a member of the Blue Ribbon Task Force Evaluating Amusement Park Rides and Neurotrauma appointed by the United States Congress.  Based on his experience as a member of this task force, Dr. Varney will share a story about the interactions between science, business, and government mixed with politics and group dynamics.  In particular, Dr. Varney will address the issues of national politics & science and non-academics in the forefront of clinical medicine and policy.

Current Issues in Psychiatric Medicine and Neuropsychology:  Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Dr. Nils Varney will present the latest research on the incidence, diagnosis, and prognosis of mild traumatic brain injury.  This talk is of particular relevance to students interested in careers involving neuroscience, medicine, clinical psychology, and rehabilitative therapies.  There will be a reception immediately preceding the event.
About the speaker:  Dr. Varney is the recipient of numerous awards and author of many journal publications, neuropsychology assessment tests, books, and research reviews.  He is a highly respected scientist and clinician in the field of clinical neuropsychology and particularly brain injury.  His current position is as chief of psychology services at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA.  Dr. Varney is a Diplomate in Clinical Neuropsychology, member of the American Boards of Professional Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology.
