Using Dreamweaver and Making a Web page

(Adapted from Drew's Rules)

4: Common problems

Defining Sites.

Don’t do it. EVER. For the purposes of your projects you have no reason to define a site. It causes headaches and problems for everyone. Dreamweaver wants all people using the same computer to use the same site. That's the headache. Any defined sites discovered by student staff will be deleted. Anyone caught defining a site will be shot on site. When beginning your pages, select new Basic html page. That’s all you need for the purposes of your projects.

Losing the extension (the .xxx at the end of the file)

Dreamweaver does not like files without extensions. All of your picture files should have .jpg, .gif or other image file extension on the end of it. Do not just add an extension to a file. Make sure to use the correct extension for that file. All Dreamweaver files must have .html or .htm at the end. If you accidentally delete the extension, Dreamweaver will only open the filfe in "code" view and you will not be able to see your project in the "design" view.

Spelling

Dreamweaver does have a spell checker but it is limited and it does not do foreign languages. You can copy you paragraphs and paste them into Word to spell check or you can use the built in spell checker. Click on Text on the top menu and choose Check Spelling at the bottom of the list.
