People and Culture


Peru is a diverse country with a variety of people and culture. 45% of the population is indian. The mestizos, a mix between white and indian, make up 42% of the population. About 10% is white and 3% are black and asian. Every group has its own lifestyle. The whites and mestizos  live in a modern Western style in the highland cities, and the jungles of eastern Peru home isolated Indian tribes.
Along with various traditional Indian religions, about 89% of Peru's population is Roman Catholic. Many people still have strong beliefs in traditions and rituals dating back to the Inca times. The Andean and coastal people have their own kinds of music, dance, and culture.
